A new view
of a historic flight.

First Orbit combines footage from the International Space Station with the original mission audio to evoke Gagarin’s 1961 journey around Earth.

The independent film premiered worldwide on 12 April 2011. KiwiSpace contributed access and outreach, sharing the premiere and hosting local download mirrors for New Zealand viewers.

Watching the Earth pass below offered a simple invitation: share the view, and consider how much had changed in fifty years of human spaceflight.

A greeting
from orbit.

KiwiSpace joined Stardome Observatory & Planetarium and the Embassy of the Russian Federation for a free Auckland screening of First Orbit. The evening marked fifty years since Gagarin’s flight and also served as KiwiSpace’s launch celebration.

Space enthusiasts and members of Auckland’s Russian community were invited to share the occasion. The celebration included a recorded greeting from Dmitry Kondratyev, then commander of Expedition 27 aboard the International Space Station.

Kondratyev addressed New Zealand space enthusiasts and congratulated KiwiSpace on its incorporation. His message was also played at the Wellington celebrations at Carter Observatory.

The original recorded greeting, preserved from KiwiSpace’s 2011 archive.
