Azuki is small red coloured bean, from east Asia. It is widely
eaten in sweetened bean paste. In Japan, it is cooked with rice on special events.

Azuki is easy to handle and suitable for observing the effects of space on plants.

Impatiens seed

Impatiens balsamina

Impatiens balsamina is a decorative plant. In 2011 a batch of these seeds visited the International Space Station and then returned to Earth.

 

Each batch of seed is accompanied by a copy of the phytosanitary certificates - issued by the Japanese Plant Protection Agency that certify that the seed is free of diseases and pests that may affect New Zealand.
