What are we looking for?

Case 1 - plants are planted sprouts-up like in the space experiment

...

Tip

When making observations in the dark, use a flashlight that is covered with a green cellophane wrap.

The root of the Azuki bean will emerge first from the seed, followed by the stem.

If the plant was grown in the dark, keep the observation time brief to prevent prolonged light exposure.

...

  • Measure the roots and stems every day with a ruler and write down your observations
  • Make sketches, and take photos.
  • Note when

...

  • will it start

...

  • sprouting after watering?

...

  • Observe any other changes after the seeds start to sprout.
  • Compare your results with the Azuki beans grown in space: observe the difference in colour, size and shape and think of different reasons for these differences.
  • Compare your results with every one else's

Firstly, the root will emerge from the seed

  1. Root emerges first

The stem will emerge next.

2. Stem comes up next

Case 2 - Alternative experiment

  • What changes would occur if the hillum will be planted pointing downwards/horizontally?
  • Observe if there are any changes in the direction of growth of the root or stem
  • What would it be the difference if you planted the beans in a light or dark enviroment?

Come up with different ideas to investigate some more!Image Removed

Tip

When you have finished with the Azuki bean experiment, transplant it in a planter or the ground and continue growing it.
